Activated Charcoal: Dirty Dogs and the Shampoos that Love Them

Activated Charcoal: Dirty Dogs and the Shampoos that Love Them

Burke the office dog and Sai are always disappearing during work. They go to Starbucks and talk about things like Activated Charcoal.

Sai: Excess charcoal after that crazy summer barbecue? Here’s what you can do with it. No, just kidding. That is not activated charcoal. The kind of charcoal you use for barbecues can’t remove impurities, prevent poisoning, or filter water.

Burke: And activated charcoal can do all that? How?

Sai: And more!

The main deal of activated charcoal is its ability to adsorb. Yes, aDsorb with a “d.” Imagine a small bowl of activated charcoal working like a giant sponge. And better, because unlike a sponge that absorbs, adsorption means that chemicals, gases, poisonous substances, odors, and impurities are chemically adhered to the activated charcoal, waiting to be washed out.

Poisoning? Activated charcoal can help! It is basically the universal antidote for poisonings. The adsorption of poisonous chemicals and drugs in the body after ingesting activated charcoal prevents absorption by the blood. The activated charcoal carrying all the bad stuff is then passed out. Fun fact: activated charcoal is listed in the World Health Organization’s (WHO) 2017 list of essential medicines as an antidote for non-specific poisoning.

Hey Burke, if it’s good enough to be ingested, it’s good enough for your coat.

Burke: And it’s good for my coat… because?

Sai: When not ingested, activated charcoal works the same. It will adsorb all the nasty stuff off your coat, leaving it clean and bright. Nasty stuff? Yes, activated charcoal especially attracts carbon-based impurities that may dull your fur.

Sadly, activated charcoal is scentless. Not very attractive as a shampoo, is it? But have no fear, kin+kind is here! Our Charcoal Shampoo blends coriander, patchouli, and black pepper essential oils. All the benefits of activated charcoal, with all the delicious fragrance of essential oils. Removes impurities and eliminates odors all in one!

Burke: OMG, seriously? Mom should use it too!

Sai: She already does, silly. She was your guinea pig, and now she’s sure you’ll love it.

For thousands of years, charcoal has been used medically. Humans now are using it as a water filter, charcoal face masks, charcoal shampoos, and even brushing their teeth with it. You sold?

Burke: I want everything to smell like kin+kind's Charcoal Shampoo now. GONNA SHAMPOO EVERYTHING.
